DAY 1 Make an express trip over I-90 where we will stop at the Wild Horse Wind Farm. Set high on a ridge, the Renewable Energy Center provides an up-close look at the facility’s 149 wind turbines, as well as 360 degree views of Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and the Columbia River Basin. Take a 60 minute guided tour, exploring the educational displays and learning more about wind and solar technology, as well as the area’s unique natural history. Break for a lunch here, before continuing to the Gingko Petrified Forest for a ranger talk and time to explore the trail and visitor center. Follow the Columbia River into Wenatchee for an overnight stay. There is several restaurants in walking distance including a well rated BBQ Joint (L)
DAY 2 Enjoy breakfast at hotel before boarding one of the Chelan boat company’s new express vessels for a 55-mile lake journey to the remote village of Stehekin. Not accessible by road, people living here rely on boats for delivery of supplies and mail. In the upper basin, this pristine body of water plunges to depths of 1,500 feet. Along the way, the captain provides light narration on the folklore and points of interest. In Stehekin, our partners will pick you up in their bus to take you on a guided tour with locals who grew up here. You’ll stop at the one-room schoolhouse, now a registered historical landmark. Arrive at the 312-foot Rainbow Falls—at its fullest this time of year and sounding like liquid thunder! Visit the Old Orchard and explore historic buildings. We’ll stop at the famous Stehekin Pastry Company for lunch on your own and time at their gift shop. Return on the historic Lady of the Lake. This classic boat has been cruising the lake since 1976. Going just 15 miles per hour and having the most outside deck space, a ride on this classic allows you enjoy the natural beauty around you on the 3 hour journey back. Check into our lakefront resort for an overnight stay with beautiful grounds and outstanding views. We will provide a shuttle into the charming historic village with tons of restaurants in walking distance. (B)
DAY 3 After breakfast, continue to the Western Village of Winthrop. Take a private guided tour of the Shaffer Museum, explore the shops, and have lunch on your own before heading out on one of our state’s most scenic byways—Highway 20, North Cascades. Our 140 mile journey includes several overlooks, including the turquoise blue Diablo Lake. Take a short accessible boardwalk to the Sterling Munro Viewpoint for views of the Picket Range and Terror Glacier—one of more than 300 glaciers in the North Cascades. The views from the Washington Pass Overlook are expansive. Look for Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winters Spires, with massive peaks jutting above the creek and highway. Expect a late return home as we want you to enjoy all this National Scenic Byway has to offer. (B,D)
